JOI uses thermoelectric technology to convert a temperature difference into electricity. At the center of JOI is a unique thermoelectric module. The patented JOI design activates its LED lights by creating a hot side and a cold side on the module and when this happens a principle called the “Seebeck Effect” causes electrons to flow within the module.

Yes, the cooler, moving air outdoors allows JOI to operate optimally.
JOI is designed and tested for outdoor use. However, third party fire safety engineers have examined JOI and found it much safer than burning an open candle inside a home and safe for use indoors when the operating instructions are followed.
JOI requires draft airflow to be created in order to work properly. Allow the candle to burn for at least 90 seconds before closing and latching the door.
Water condenses on the cold glass until it warms up. Allow candle to continue burning and condensation will disappear.
This could be a result of soot build-up on the heat collector. Clean heat collector as shown in the manual.
For optimum results use only 5/8” (16mm), 4 hour tea light candles.
A.Your candle wick is likely too long. Trim candle wick to ¼” (6 mm) length.
B.Candle wick is not in center of heat collector. Replace candle with one that has wick standing upright in the center of the candle.
Excessive moisture has found its way into JOI. Allow the candle to burn in the candle holder cradle with the door open for 3 minutes before closing and latching the door.
The Heat booster may have come loose during shipping. If the heat booster has come loose it must be put back on properly. If the booster is put on incorrectly the lights will NOT come on. The open sides should be on the bottom and the back. Please refer to the illustration below:

No. Use of any other fuel can result in fire or injury and void your warranty.
You may have installed the heat booster upside down. The bottom must be open to allow the heat from the flame to enter the chamber. See below diagram.
