JOI uses thermoelectric technology to convert a temperature difference into electricity. At the center of JOI is a unique thermoelectric module. The patented JOI design activates its LED lights by creating a hot side and a cold side on the module and when this happens a principle called the “Seebeck Effect” causes electrons to flow within the module.

Yes, the cooler, moving air outdoors allows JOI to operate optimally.
JOI is designed and tested for outdoor use. However, third party fire safety engineers have examined JOI and found it much safer than burning an open candle inside a home and safe for use indoors when the operating instructions are followed.
JOI requires draft airflow to be created in order to work properly. Allow the candle to burn for at least 45 seconds but not more than 60 seconds before closing and latching the door.
Water condenses on the cold glass until it warms up. Allow candle to continue burning and condensation will disappear.
Your candle has been burning abnormally and has activated the JOI safety feature. Wait approx. 4-5 minutes until you hear an additional snap as the safety feature resets. Change the candle, clean any soot buildup and relight according to instructions.
This could be a result of soot build-up on the heat collector. Clean heat collector as shown in the manual.
For optimum results use only 5/8” (16mm), 4 hour tea light candles.
A.Your candle wick is likely too long. Trim candle wick to ¼” (6 mm) length.
B.Candle wick is not in center of heat collector. Replace candle with one that has wick standing upright in the center of the candle.
Excessive moisture has found its way into JOI. Allow the candle to burn in the candle holder cradle with the door open for 3 minutes before closing and latching the door.
A) Allow JOI to cool completely.
B) Place JOI on top of newspaper and wear gloves. (soot is very messy)
C) Open door.
D) Insert paper towel below heat collector to catch any falling soot.
E) Remove heat collector shield by pulling straight out.
F) Remove soot by running a folded piece of paper or clean paint brush through the grooves of the heat collector.
G) Carefully remove the sooted paper towel.
H) Replace heat collector shield and close door.

The Heat booster may have come loose during shipping. If the heat booster has come loose it must be put back on for JOI to work optimally.

No. Use of any other fuel can result in fire or injury and void your warranty.
Sometimes during shipping the candle holder will get knocked off its rails. The door will only open about an inch. Using a device such as a pencil/pen, simply disconnect the two stainless wires attached to the door:
- Insert your pencil/pen into the opening between the two wires and pull the wire towards the side of the door until it releases.
- Repeat this process on the other side and the door will fall open.
- Remove the candle holder assembly from the unit.
- Slide the candle holder onto the two rails.
- Reconnect the two ends back into the sleeve on the door.
JOI is designed as a high efficiency device. The standard diameter for a tealight is 38mm, and the JOI candle holder was designed to snugly hold standard tealights including those sold by Ikea and WalMart. After the JOI went into production, Ikea and WalMart appear to have changed suppliers and manufacturing methods for tealights, and they are now 39mm. Not much difference, but they don't fit. All other tealights do fit. For an immediate fix, purchase tealights from another source, such as ACE (USA) or Home Hardware (Canada). For a permanent solution, contact Caframo with the serial number of your JOI and we will send you a part that you can swap out in your candle holder to enable it to accommodate 39mm tealights. All you need is a Phillips screwdriver.
